A Russian naval ship conducted a live-fire weapons exercise in international waters approximately 40 miles south of Plymouth, in south-west England, on Monday, July 21st, 2026, according to Britain's defence ministry.
The Russian vessel informed the British naval patrol ship HMS Tyne of its intention to fire and requested it move to a safer position before carrying out the 30-minute exercise. The British Navy monitored and continued to track the Russian ship closely.
Newly-appointed UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting described the incident as "performative and irresponsible" during a press conference in London. He emphasized the UK government's resolve to stand against Russian aggression in Ukraine and towards its allies.
British media identified the Russian ship as the Neustrashimy, a frigate from Russia's Baltic Fleet. The incident coincided with the first day in office of Britain's new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham.
Russia claimed the British ship was on a dangerous course, while Britain's defence ministry characterized the event as an "isolated" incident intended to prevent a possible collision.
