An Australian woman, 34-year-old Jenitar Na'amoana, has given birth to rare, naturally-conceived identical quadruplets at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. The four girls were delivered via caesarean section at 28 weeks and four days on 14 July 2026. These monozygotic quadruplets originated from a single fertilised egg that split into four embryos.
Jenitar and her husband Jortham, who already have four children, were reportedly taken by "immense surprise" upon learning they were expecting quadruplets. Dr Alexa Bendall, a maternal foetal medicine specialist and obstetrician who cared for Jenitar throughout the pregnancy, estimated that identical quadruplets occur in "one in every 15 million pregnancies" and noted that "to share the same placenta - this is unheard of."
Due to the extreme risk associated with such pregnancies, Jenitar was admitted as an inpatient at 25 weeks for close monitoring. Dr Bendall said, "We always said that if we could get her to 28 weeks, we would be doing well." She added, "So the fact that we've got four beautiful, healthy babies born at 28 weeks and four days is incredible and we're very happy to be a part of it."
The hospital highlighted the rarity and complexity of the case, emphasizing the successful outcome despite the high-risk nature of the pregnancy.
