US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday, July 20, 2026, that it has relaunched air strikes against Iran for the ninth consecutive night. These strikes aim to degrade Iran's military capabilities used to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The renewed military action follows the death of a US service member in northern Iraq during a "controlled detonation" of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone, according to CENTCOM. This marks the third US soldier killed since the end of a 60-day ceasefire in early July, bringing the total number of US soldiers killed in fighting to 17.

Additionally, two other US service members were pronounced dead after an Iranian attack in Jordan on Friday, July 18, 2026.
