New violence erupted in the Middle East early on Monday, July 20, 2026, as the United States announced another wave of strikes on Iran, marking the ninth consecutive night of attacks. Since the conflict began on February 28, 2026, Iran has retaliated by targeting US allies and military assets in the region and has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil supplies passed before the war.
