U.S. gas prices have surged to an average of $4 a gallon again as the U.S. and Iran launched more attacks on Monday, July 20th, 2026. According to the motor club federation AAA, this national average reflects a rise after prices had dipped below $4 in mid-June following an interim deal between the U.S. and Iran.
The price varies by state, with some drivers paying well over $4 a gallon due to factors such as local supply and tax rates. Globally, high gas prices are also impacting consumers as a result of ongoing conflict.
Gas prices first exceeded $4 a gallon on average at the end of March 2026. Despite a temporary easing, crude oil prices have climbed again, with Brent crude rising 3.2% to $90.95 per barrel and U.S. benchmark crude increasing 2.8% to $84.04 per barrel on Monday.
Former President Donald Trump had previously expressed frustration that gas prices were not falling as quickly as crude oil prices.
