Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson has effectively secured enough delegates to win the abbreviated Democratic nomination race to replace former candidate Graham Platner. This development comes after Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and former public health official Nirav Shah dropped out of the contest on Sunday, July 19, 2026.

Jackson-aligned delegates claimed the vast majority of the 500 delegate slots available during two days of selection across Maine's 16 counties, including all 149 slots in Cumberland County, the state's most populous region.

Jackson expressed confidence in a social media post, stating, "In November, Mainers will defeat Susan Collins, and we will take back our Senate seat from the billionaires and corporations who think they own it."

While delegates pledged to Jackson are not bound to support him at the upcoming nominating convention, he remains in a strong position to secure the nomination. The general election against longtime Republican Senator Susan Collins is expected to be a highly competitive and costly battle, part of a dozen key races nationwide that will influence control of the Senate majority.

Bellows, in a statement that did not mention Jackson, cited increasing attacks on democracy and said her focus would remain on her role as Secretary of State. Shah, who previously served as director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention and as principal deputy director of the federal CDC, endorsed Jackson upon his withdrawal.

Jackson has emphasized his platform as a fight against a system he describes as rigged against working people, advocating for Medicare-for-all, strong unions, higher wages, reproductive freedom, and economic fairness.
