A tragic incident occurred in Ciudad Rodrigo, western Spain, during celebrations of Spain’s victory in the 2026 World Cup. A fountain collapsed under the weight of numerous people who had climbed onto it to celebrate Spain’s first World Cup win since 2010, resulting in the death of a 13-year-old boy and injuries to several others.

The city hall of Ciudad Rodrigo expressed its sadness and condolences for the boy’s death in a Facebook post, stating, “What should have been a celebration of Spain’s team in the football World Cup turned into tragedy.”

Emergency services reported that shortly after 12:30 a.m. local time, they received calls about the fountain collapsing on numerous people, and that another youth was injured in the incident.

Local media confirmed the fountain’s collapse was due to the crowd climbing on it during the celebrations.
