Hundreds of protesters rallied in Houston, Texas, on Sunday, July 20th, 2026, demanding justice for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican man who was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent earlier this month. The demonstrators marched from Ervan Chew Park and briefly shut down a bridge on Dunlavy Street, carrying banners with messages such as “Abolish ICE” and “Justice for Lorenzo,” according to local media and videos posted online.

This protest followed nationwide rallies held on Saturday, including one in Portland, Maine, where Joan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian man, was fatally shot during a traffic stop in nearby Biddeford on July 13th. Democratic lawmakers have since called for an investigation into ICE’s hiring practices after allegations surfaced that the officer involved in Duran Guerrero’s killing had a history of mental health issues and had subjected his ex-wife to violent and threatening behavior.

According to The Associated Press, encounters with ICE and other immigration agents have resulted in at least 10 deaths since January 2025, the start of former President Trump’s second term. Additionally, The Trace’s Gun Violence Data Hub reports that at least 13 people have been wounded since the immigration crackdown began. Human Rights Watch states that at least 52 people have died while in ICE detention.

The protests highlight ongoing concerns about ICE’s enforcement tactics and the agency’s accountability.
