Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), stated on Monday, July 20, 2026, that if the 2028 Democratic presidential nominee adopts a tone similar to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D), Republicans could face a “huge f—ing problem.”

In a post on the social platform X, McCain said she had listened to a recent episode of The New York Times’s podcast "The Interview," which featured Mamdani, a democratic socialist. She described his tone as “part folksy everyman,” portraying Republicans as having abandoned the working class and being “a bunch of elites” without sounding harsh or conspiratorial.

Mamdani, who gained national attention with his successful mayoral campaign last year, has rapidly increased his political influence. Recently, three candidates he supported won House primaries, signaling his growing impact.

McCain noted, “He has gotten very strong, very fast and is evolving in his national messaging to the rest of the country. Despite my abject fear and repulsion of socialism, it is really impactful.” She added that if Democrats are strategic, they would nominate someone with Mamdani’s tone on economics and national policy, excluding foreign policy issues like Israel.

Mamdani himself criticized the Democratic Party last month, saying it had lost focus on the economic issues facing the American working class. In an interview with MS NOW, he stated, “The party, as a whole, has lost its focus on working people.”
