Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, announced the birth of their fourth child, a son named Alec Neel Vance, on Sunday, July 19th, 2026. The couple shared a statement on X confirming that both Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and that their other children are thrilled to meet their new little brother.
The child was born at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where Usha Vance is currently recovering. The Vances, married since 2014, have three other children: two sons, Ewan (9) and Vivek (6), and a daughter, Mirabel (4).
This event is notable as it is the first time in more than 150 years that a vice president's family has had a child while in office. The last recorded instance was 156 years ago with Schuyler Colfax Jr., who served as vice president to Ulysses S. Grant.
In his book "Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith," Vance revealed that he had asked Usha to have another child for years, but she initially declined, partly due to the family's increased public profile. However, her perspective changed following the death of Charlie Kirk last fall. The Vances had flown Kirk's body back to Arizona, and his widow, Erika Kirk, expressed regret about not having more children with her late husband. Vance reflected, "Something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy. One life was stolen from us, but another was given."
Usha Vance also responded to Erika Kirk's comments about her family, underscoring the personal impact of these events.
The vice president and second lady extended their gratitude to the medical staff at Walter Reed for their care during the delivery.
