Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.), a Democratic candidate for Senate in Michigan, denied on Sunday, July 19, 2026, that former President Donald Trump’s actions toward Iran were influenced by Israel. Appearing on NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday,” Stevens called it “a fool’s run to place blame on him supposedly being dictated by others.”

Stevens emphasized that "Donald Trump is gonna do what Donald Trump does," dismissing suggestions that Israeli officials directed his policies. She also criticized both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for failing to achieve long-term peace in the Middle East.

The U.S. has recently resumed strikes on Iran, marking a return to conflict amid ongoing efforts to manage the situation. Some figures, including Vice President Vance, have accused members of the Israeli government of attempting to prolong the war indefinitely. Trump himself has stated he was not drawn into war by Israel in any capacity.

Stevens also took a jab at her Democratic primary opponent in Michigan, stating, "My opponent in my Democratic primary here in Michigan, he cannot say that."

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party showed signs of division over its stance on Israel, as a recent measure to maintain a strong relationship with Israel failed in a vote of 104-314-10, with 103 Democrats in favor, 98 against, and 10 present.
