Rescue operations are underway after the MV Barima ferry, carrying 116 passengers and crew, capsized off the coast of Guyana near Iron Punt. The ferry had issued a distress call at about 11pm on Saturday, July 19th, 2026 (03:00 GMT on Sunday), while traveling from the capital, Georgetown, to Port Kaituma.

Guyana’s Prime Minister Mark Phillips told the AFP news agency on Sunday that 53 people had been rescued so far. Authorities expect to rescue more individuals as the search continues during daylight hours. The operation involves Guyana’s coastguard and private vessels, according to Public Works Minister Juan Edghill.

Edghill noted that the ferry was equipped with approximately 250 life jackets, eight lifeboats, and other safety gear. Rescuers are racing to find dozens of people still missing at sea.

The incident comes amid other regional concerns, including migrant safety and political tensions involving Venezuela.
