Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara, a high-profile Cuban artist and member of the San Isidro Movement, has arrived in the United States where he is expected to live in exile. Alcantara, 38, was sentenced to five years in prison on charges including insulting national symbols, contempt, and disturbing the public order.

The San Isidro Movement, known for its opposition to the Cuban government, has been described by Amnesty International as a “constant target” of repression by Cuban authorities.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Alcantara’s arrival on Saturday, July 19th, 2026, and called on the Cuban government to release 700 other political prisoners detained in the country. Rubio stated, “For daring to imagine a free Cuba, he was harassed, detained and imprisoned time and again, but today, he is in exile.” He also reaffirmed that “The Trump administration remains committed to the Cuban people’s pursuit of freedom.”

Meanwhile, Cuba continues to face challenges including international sanctions and repeated power grid failures, with the latest blackout marking the third in ten days.
