San Francisco police located the wreckage of the Volare, a 49-foot cabin cruiser that sank on Wednesday afternoon, July 15th, 2026, in the San Francisco Bay. The boat capsized after being hit by a wave while carrying 20 people who were on board to scatter the ashes of a loved one.

The submerged vessel was found on the rocky seabed approximately 120 feet (36 meters) deep near the site of the sinking. The San Francisco police marine unit used boat-mounted sonar to locate the wreckage and is now deploying a remotely operated vehicle to assess the site and evaluate the possibility of safe recovery.

The body of a missing person recovered prior to the wreckage discovery was identified by the San Francisco medical examiner as 58-year-old Tondra Madruga, also known as Tondra Miller. She was one of three people reported missing following the incident.

“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of our beloved mother, daughter, sister, and aunt, Tondra Madruga,” said family member Quin Madruga on Facebook. “Our hearts remain with every family impacted, and we sincerely appreciate your kindness and understanding.”

One man, Clifford Boisa, died immediately after being rescued from the cold water. The Coast Guard and rescue crews have searched over 800 square miles (more than 2,000 square kilometers) in efforts to locate the remaining missing individuals.

Authorities continue the search and investigation into the tragic capsizing.
