NEW CITY, N.Y. — The 2026 midterm elections will see the battle for the House majority hinge on swing districts such as New York-17, NY-3, and NY-4, all located in suburban New York City. House Republicans are leveraging the ongoing struggle within the Democratic Party between its left-wing insurgents and center-left establishment as a political weapon.

Republican Representative Mike Lawler, a two-term congressman representing NY-17, which covers much of New York City's northern suburbs, pointed to recent victories by three far-left Democrats backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. These insurgents defeated more moderate, establishment-backed candidates in high-profile contests drawing national attention.

Lawler stated, "Democrats have gone further and further and further to the left with no end in sight," and warned that "these radical socialists are taking over the Democratic Party, not just for Congress, but the state legislature."

Jeanine Driscoll, the GOP nominee in NY-4, noted the impact of these far-left wins in neighboring New York City on Nassau County, saying, "I think it will definitely affect us in Nassau County since we're a border county."

Political strategist Conley, referencing Lawler's background, told Fox News Digital, "Voters are sick of political insiders, politicians, political operatives who care more about their next reelection than they do solving the actual problems with the time they are given to represent their people."

Meanwhile, Suozzi emphasized the need for better organization among moderates, stating, "You’ll see big rallies for people who are extremists, far right, far left, but if I show up and say ‘hey let's work together to solve the problems that we face in our country,’ you’re not going to get a big rally for that."

The outcome in these key districts is seen as critical for control of the House, with Republicans aiming to capitalize on Democratic divisions ahead of the November elections.
