On Thursday, July 16th, 2026, Syrian authorities announced the seizure of a weapons shipment at the al-Tanf border crossing between Syria and Iraq. The shipment included long-range missiles, rockets, and drones concealed inside an oil tanker truck headed to the Syrian city of Baniyas, according to Syria’s General Authority of Ports and Customs.

Customs officers discovered the concealed arms during routine inspection procedures after subjecting the vehicle to a thorough search, as reported by Syria’s state news agency.

Citing sources from Syria’s Interior Ministry, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) stated that preliminary investigations indicated the shipment was intended to transit Syrian territory before being delivered to the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. Hezbollah has denied involvement in the incident.

The military’s Joint Operations Command said Baghdad would coordinate with Syrian authorities to investigate the attempted smuggling, hold those responsible accountable, and enhance security along the shared Syria-Iraq border.
