Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced he will not attend the Garma Festival commencing July 31, 2026, breaking a promise he made last year to attend the event every year while in office. Albanese defended his decision by stating he "hasn't had a day off all year" and will be on leave during the festival period.

Senior ministers are expected to represent the government at the Garma Festival, the country's largest Indigenous gathering, which runs for four days in the Northern Territory. Albanese added that he plans to attend another festival in a different remote part of the Northern Territory in the coming days.

The Yothu Yindi Foundation, which organizes the Garma Festival, acknowledged Albanese's longstanding support, stating he "is a good friend of the Festival, and has been to every Garma since 2019."

This marks a notable instance of the government not fulfilling a public commitment, echoing a previous election promise related to tax policy that was later reversed.
