New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under fire following a press conference on Thursday, July 16, 2026, where a local housing advocate described evictions as a form of "violence" while Mamdani stood behind her.

Antonia Marrero, a member of the Housing Organizers for People Empowerment (HOPE) Tenant Union, said, "The Mamdani administration is emboldening us so we no longer tolerate the violence of evictions as a matter of business as usual."

The event also featured the release of a "Rental Ripoff Report," which argued that residents in New York City are paying excessive rent without adequate returns and proposed 23 solutions to address the issue.

Mamdani, who has faced ongoing criticism for his housing policies, was quickly criticized on social media by conservatives and political commentators. The Heritage Foundation’s senior fellow Mike Gonzalez posted on X, "This looks like a scene out of a Batman movie." The conservative influencer account End Wokeness highlighted Mamdani’s grin during the statement, commenting, "Look at Mamdani's face in the back," and added, "Even Mamdani had to dial up the fake smile to 11 to hide how ridiculous this all is."

Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis also posted on X, joining the chorus of criticism.

The backlash reflects broader tensions over housing policy and tenant rights in the city.
