Isabella Giusti ("Izzy"), a junior at Barnard College and native of Savannah, along with Joni Saxon-Giusti and Peter Giusti (collectively, "the Giustis"), have filed a defamation lawsuit against Accuracy in Media, Inc. and its president Adam Guillette. The suit arises from media coverage following protests at Columbia University in April 2024.

On April 18, 2024, Izzy participated in a protest concerning the war in Gaza on Columbia University's main quad and was arrested as part of a mass arrest involving about 100 students. Subsequently, the New York Post published an article identifying Izzy as one of the arrested protesters.

Three days later, on April 21, 2024, a masked individual was photographed holding a sign stating "AL-QASAM'S NEXT TARGETS" in front of pro-Israel counter-protestors near the same location. The Giustis' verified complaint notes that the Al-Qassam Brigades are the military wing of Hamas and that the sign was widely perceived as offensive and implying potential violence against counter-protestors.

The lawsuit contends that Accuracy in Media misidentified the person holding the sign, leading to defamatory implications about the Giustis. The Georgia Court of Appeals, in a June 29 decision authored by Judge Brian Rickman and joined by Chief Judge Trenton Brown and Judge Amanda Mercier, held that some statements published by Accuracy in Media could reasonably be interpreted as defamatory facts capable of being proven false, allowing the defamation claims to move forward.

The case highlights ongoing disputes over media accuracy and the boundaries of opinion versus defamatory statements in politically charged contexts.
