French Prime Minister Sebastian Lecornu arrived in Rabat on Wednesday, July 16th, 2026, marking another milestone in the diplomatic relations between France and Morocco. The two-day visit includes high-level discussions focused on security, defense, investment, and economic cooperation.

This visit reflects France's intensified efforts to rebuild ties with its former North African colony following years of strained relations. Notably, in 2024, France reset diplomatic relations by recognizing Morocco’s claim over the disputed Western Sahara territory.

With France's influence in North Africa and the Sahel region facing challenges, Paris is keen to secure reliable partnerships amid growing engagement from Turkey, China, and the United States across Africa. The African Development Bank recently ranked Morocco as the top African country in industrialization, citing its industrial upgrading, export diversification, and strong industrial policies.

France hopes that closer economic ties will help it recover losses, while Morocco gains access to investment and technology through this partnership.
