SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium, July 16, 2026 – Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula One world champion, revealed that his main focus during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend is to ensure he gets home in time to watch Spain face Argentina in the World Cup final on Sunday, July 20, 2026.

Alonso's Aston Martin team has struggled this Formula One season, scoring only one point from nine rounds and often finishing races in the back. The Belgian Grand Prix marks the last race before Aston Martin plans to introduce a major chassis upgrade and an improved engine, potentially signaling a turning point for the team.

Reflecting on history, Alonso noted that in 2010, the last time a Formula One race coincided with the World Cup final, he was racing for Ferrari and competing for wins. Spain, the current European champions, won that World Cup in South Africa and are now pursuing their second title against the defending champions.

"As we don't expect much this weekend," Alonso told reporters at Spa-Francorchamps, "the main focus on Sunday will be to get home and watch the match, to be honest."

Alonso acknowledged the logistical challenge, saying, "It's going to be tricky because we are flying back home.
