On Tuesday, July 15th, 2026, Louis County in northeast Minnesota declared a State of Local Emergency and a State of Local Disaster due to extensive wildfire damage and the need for public resource deployment. The Forest Service reported at least 17 wildfires burning across St. Louis and Lake Counties, including three within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

The fires have consumed at least 33,000 acres as of Tuesday afternoon. Two wildfires originating in Canada have crossed the international border into the United States, with the Forest Service expecting the fire to enter Cook County, Minnesota, near Monument Portage. Authorities are coordinating with Canadian officials to manage the cross-border threat.

In response to the wildfire smoke, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued an air quality alert across much of the state from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Residents, especially seniors, children, and those with respiratory conditions, were advised to limit outdoor activities. Louis County established temporary evacuation points at a municipal center to assist affected residents.
