Western Australia's Liberal leader, Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas, has stated there is "no white flag being waved" ahead of the upcoming Secret Harbour by-election on August 29, 2026. The by-election will fill the seat vacated by long-serving Labor MP Paul Papalia, who retired from state politics last week.

Labor has historically held the Secret Harbour seat, described as a Labor stronghold. Labor's candidate is former political staffer and author Georgia Tree. The WA Liberal Party is expected to endorse former submariner Ryan Robertson as its candidate, the sole nominee for the party.

One Nation, a third contender in the race, has yet to announce its candidate. Zempilas acknowledged the party's growing influence in WA, saying, "I am very realistic and pragmatic. I see what is happening around us and they will play a part, One Nation will play a part."

Zempilas emphasized the Liberals' commitment to winning the seat, stating, "But every contest the Liberals enter, we are in it to win it and we will be going for the win, and if we can [bring into] effect Labor losing that seat, that will be a win for us."

When asked if a One Nation victory would be considered a win for the Liberals, Zempilas responded that any loss by Labor would be a victory for his party. He also dismissed suggestions that the Liberals were conceding defeat before the contest began.

Zempilas noted his shared naval background with Papalia and the unique naval presence in the electorate as factors that could work in his favor.
