A Hong Kong District Court on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, convicted two prisoners, Bosco Lee, 21, and Brian Lam Shing-wai, 22, of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The convictions relate to their involvement in a brutal assault on a fellow inmate at Pik Uk Prison in Sai Kung on December 26, 2023.

The attack was carried out by Tam Lik-chung, a former assistant officer with the Correctional Services Department, who had earlier pleaded guilty to the same offence. Lee and Lam, who were remanded and under Tam’s supervision at the time, denied participating in the violence.

Court testimony revealed the assault followed an incident during a bingo game in the prison’s activity room, where the victim, identified by the surname Chiu, sprinkled Tam with baby powder from behind—a penalty for losing the game. Afterward, Tam led the group to a staircase and ordered Chiu to kneel and remove his trousers. The victim was then severely wounded after a stick was repeatedly thrust into his rectum.

The case highlights serious misconduct within the prison system involving both inmates and a correctional officer.
