An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, Curtland Sawyer, is being recognized by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for providing lifesaving medical assistance to a driver injured in a serious collision with a tractor-trailer outside Festus, Missouri.

Sawyer, who was driving home on July 11, witnessed the crash and immediately stopped to help. DHS reported that he applied a tourniquet to the driver's arm to stop life-threatening bleeding and stayed with the injured motorist until emergency medical technicians arrived.

"Officer Sawyer is a hero," DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement praising his quick response and dedication.

This incident follows another recent act of heroism by an ICE officer who rescued a 6-year-old child from a Florida swimming pool and performed lifesaving CPR.

The Department of Homeland Security emphasized that ICE officers do not hesitate to assist those in need and encouraged the public to thank them for their service.
