Hong Kong officials have committed to accelerating renovation, equipment installation, and testing at the upgraded Huanggang Port border checkpoint. This comes as the city's legislature prepares to approve the Huanggang Port Hong Kong Port Area Bill, which establishes the legal framework for a co-location arrangement at the crossing.

Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung emphasized that the bill must be approved by July 31, 2026, to enable Hong Kong to exercise jurisdiction once the port area is commissioned on the same day. "Once we have ensured that everything is ready and the public can use the border facilities safely and smoothly, we will proceed with the formal opening," Tang said following the bill's first reading.

Tang also noted ongoing coordination with Shenzhen regarding the opening date, expressing hope to open the rebuilt Huanggang Port for both Hong Kong and mainland residents as soon as possible. Preparatory work after the bill's passage will include installation and testing of border control systems and stress tests of the facilities.

The Legislative Council’s House Committee is scheduled to hold a special meeting on Thursday, July 16, 2026, to consider the bill and decide whether to form a bill committee for detailed scrutiny.
