Dr. Hassan Khalil Almukayed, a Palestinian doctor from Gaza, remains detained by Israeli authorities without charge. He is one of at least 15 Palestinian doctors from Gaza currently held in Israeli detention.
Hassan Almukayed was arrested on October 25, 2024, according to Naji Abbas of Physicians for Human Rights-Israel (PHRI), an organization representing nearly all detained doctors from Gaza. This arrest occurred two months before Israeli forces captured another Gaza doctor, Hussam Abu Safia, who reportedly shows signs of torture, according to his family.
The nonprofit PHRI represents 14 doctors, including Almukayed and Abu Safia, in petitions for their release before the Israeli Supreme Court. Despite a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas months ago, these doctors remain imprisoned without formal charges. Abbas stated, "We believe the state of Israel is afraid of the voices of Dr Abu Safia, Dr Hassan Almukayed and other doctors."
Nadia Almukayed, Hassan's wife, last saw him inside the Gaza hospital he refused to leave. She shared that other Palestinian prisoners released by Israel have informed her that Hassan has lost 40 kilograms (88 pounds) during his detention. She also described how their three children eagerly listen to audio reports from their lawyer after each visit.
The ongoing conflict has also affected Gaza’s Kamal Adwan hospital, where hospital workers were wounded in an Israeli drone attack.
By October 2024, the conflict had intensified around the Almukayed family, including Hassan's father and other relatives.
