Following an intervention reportedly supported by the French presidency to evacuate Yalike-Ngonzo and his family from imminent danger, French authorities unexpectedly changed course and rejected his asylum application.

Journalist Lea Perruchon of Forbidden Stories highlighted this case during the Spotlight program hosted by François Picard. She described it as more than an immigration dispute, framing it as a test of democratic governments' willingness to protect individuals who reveal covert authoritarian influence operations. Perruchon pointed out an unresolved contradiction: the same testimony that contributed to significant public investigations and international sanctions has become entangled in an asylum process with unclear reasoning.

The case raises broader questions about how liberal democracies balance security concerns, legal consistency, investigative journalism, and the strategic importance of encouraging and safeguarding future whistleblowers.
