On Wednesday, July 15th, 2026, the mayor of Cairns was told to apologise to her community after admitting to three acts of misconduct.

In a separate incident on the same day, a 15-year-old boy appeared in the Children's Court in Cairns facing one count of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm. Prosecutors alleged the boy's actions were premeditated after he allegedly stabbed a fellow student six times during a pre-arranged fight at a local school. The boy reportedly obtained a paring knife from another student and used it during the altercation.

Police were called to the school just after midday following reports of the stabbing. The victim, another 15-year-old boy, remains in stable condition in hospital.

Court proceedings were adjourned to allow police prosecutors more time to gather material. During the hearing, Mr. Baso stated that the accused had not presented any behavioural difficulties, while Ms. Walker described the bail decision as "very difficult" and indicated she needed further information before making a ruling.
