Former British politician Ann Widdecombe, 78, was found dead last week at her home in southwest England with serious injuries, according to police. Authorities believe she was attacked on Wednesday, nearly 24 hours before her body was discovered.

On Friday, Devon and Cornwall police arrested a 28-year-old white man on suspicion of her murder. By Saturday, officers from the counterterrorism police and South Yorkshire police confirmed the arrest of a 28-year-old white British national in South Yorkshire.

Laurence Taylor, head of the national counterterrorism policing, stated on Monday that investigators are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry to determine the motivation behind the attack.

Widdecombe served in the House of Commons until 2010, after which she became a television personality, appearing on shows such as Big Brother and the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing.

The murder has sent shockwaves through UK political circles, recalling the 2016 killing of Labour MP Jo Cox, who was attacked during the Brexit campaign by a Nazi-obsessed assailant.

Meanwhile, Andy Burnham is reportedly in line to become the British Prime Minister after securing party support.
