US President Donald Trump has paid writer E Jean Carroll more than $5 million (£3.7 million) in damages, three years after being found liable for sexually abusing and defaming her in a civil case, her lawyers confirmed on Tuesday, July 14th, 2026.

Carroll, an 82-year-old former magazine columnist, accused Trump of attacking her in the mid-1990s in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room in Manhattan. She also alleged that Trump defamed her in a 2022 post on his Truth Social website denying her claims.

In 2023, a New York jury awarded Carroll damages over her claim. Trump initially placed the damages into a court-controlled account following the verdict, where it remained during the appeals process. He sought to delay payment to petition the Supreme Court to reconsider its decision not to hear an appeal.

However, last week, the judge overseeing the case ordered Trump to pay the damages. Carroll's legal team confirmed she has now received more than $5.62 million, which includes the $5 million judgment plus accrued interest during the appeal.

Roberta Kaplan, Carroll's lawyer, said in a short statement, "Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict."

A representative from Trump's legal team declined to comment on the payment. Trump's lawyers have previously described the case as a "hoax" and a "Witch Hunt," alleging it was funded by Democrats.
