The age-adjusted cancer mortality rate in the United States continues to decline, driven by reduced smoking rates, earlier detection methods, and more effective treatments. A notable example is Ben Sasse (R–Neb.), who was diagnosed in December 2025 with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer and initially given only a few months to live.

Sasse’s ongoing survival is attributed to his participation in a clinical trial for daraxonrasib, a new anti-cancer drug targeting a specific genetic mutation linked to pancreatic cancer. In preliminary trials, daraxonrasib doubled survival times for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer—from 6.6 months to 13.2 months on average.

Despite severe side effects such as facial bleeding caused by reduced skin regeneration, Sasse reported in a recent interview that his pancreatic tumors had shrunk by approximately 80 percent. Additionally, cancer vaccines have shown promise; one such vaccine extended pancreatic cancer patients’ survival to an average of 29 months, with 15 months cancer-free post-vaccination.

However, the lifetime risk of an American being diagnosed with some form of cancer remains about 40 percent.

These developments underscore a hopeful trajectory for cancer treatment outcomes in the United States.
