TOKYO — Over the past decade, Beijing's conduct in the South China Sea has undermined the practical impact of the 2016 arbitration ruling that rejected China's expansive claims over much of the disputed waters. However, the ruling's legal authority remains intact, according to Paul Reichler, the Philippines' lead lawyer in the landmark case.

In May 2024, Chinese coast guard vessels fired water cannons at the Philippine resupply vessel Unaizah during a mission to Second Thomas Shoal, illustrating ongoing tensions in the region.

Reichler emphasized on the ruling's 10th anniversary that while Beijing's actions have diluted the ruling's practical effects, its legal force is as strong as ever.
