Mohamed Salah is leading Egypt’s national football team into the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they will face Argentina. Despite previous criticism from Egyptian fans, Salah now captains an undefeated team in the tournament.

However, some fans feel that Salah’s achievements cannot fully compensate for the missed opportunities of Egypt’s so-called “golden generation,” which did not participate in the 2006, 2010, or 2014 World Cups. This generation, led by legendary midfielder Mohamed Aboutrika, won the African Cup of Nations in 2006, 2008, and 2010. Aboutrika is remembered both for his skill and his political statement wearing a “Sympathise with Gaza” T-shirt.

Ahmed Elshiekh, a former national team player and current World Cup commentator for Modern MTI TV, told Al Jazeera, “It is unfair to compare the two generations.” He also praised former striker Hossam Hassan, who scored a record 69 goals for Egypt and won three AFCON titles, saying, “Hossam Hassan as a player has achieved everything you can imagine.” Hassan himself understands the pressures Salah faces, having played mostly in Egypt and experienced intense rivalries.

Egypt’s 2026 World Cup run follows their previous qualification in 2018, but the team’s tournament ended in the round of 16 after a penalty shootout defeat. The current team’s progress has reignited discussions about Egypt’s football legacy and the challenges of living up to past glories.
