US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Wednesday during the NATO summit in Turkey, the White House confirmed.
These meetings come as Kyiv seeks to draw renewed attention to the conflict with Moscow, now in its fifth year, and as Trump has expressed interest in Syria's role in the Middle East. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly confirmed the meetings in a call with reporters ahead of the summit in Ankara, where Trump will also meet Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday.
Prior to returning to the United States, Trump is expected to hold a news conference.
Zelensky and Trump recently spoke by phone, discussing the situation on the war front lines where Russian advances have slowed. Ukraine has intensified attacks on Moscow and demonstrated the capability to strike deeper into Russian territory. Zelensky expressed optimism, stating there is "a real prospect of ending this war," and indicated that discussions would continue at the NATO summit.
Both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin had congratulated Trump on the 250th anniversary of American independence during separate calls.
