At least eight people, including four children, were shot during a Fourth of July family barbecue in Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood, police reported.

The shooting occurred around 10:37 p.m. on Saturday in the courtyard of a residence near the intersection of West 30th Street and Surf Avenue, less than two blocks from the Riegelmann Boardwalk. The New York Police Department (NYPD) said a masked gunman dressed in all black and wearing a black ski mask approached the fence line along Surf Avenue and fired multiple rounds into the courtyard before fleeing on foot.

Victims include a 37-year-old man, a 33-year-old man, a 21-year-old woman, a 25-year-old woman, and four children aged 6, 7, 12, and 14. Seven victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but the 21-year-old woman was shot in the chest and remains in critical condition.

Police recovered a pistol with an extended magazine and 10 shell casings but have not made any arrests. NYPD detectives are actively working to identify and locate the suspect.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani vowed to combat gun violence, stating, “We will fight it with every single tool at our disposal.” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch acknowledged the severity of the incident, emphasizing the need for more work when children are among the victims.

This shooting adds to a record-breaking year of gun violence in New York City, with at least 215 mass shootings reported nationwide so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

The Coney Island shooting occurred hours before an NYPD officer was shot in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn in what appeared to be a targeted attack.
