Washington, D.C., is under heightened security for the America 250 Fourth of July celebrations, which include a fireworks display expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people. The main events have been designated a "national special security event," the highest possible security classification typically reserved for inaugurations and Super Bowls, placing the Secret Service in charge.
Marshals Service Director Gadyaces S. affirmed the readiness of law enforcement, stating, "When I say that we are ready, I am staking my reputation on it." Hundreds of officers from 44 local law enforcement agencies nationwide have been sworn in to protect the capital. Additionally, nearly 5,000 National Guard troops are stationed around miles of fencing in Washington.
Tara McLeese, the special agent in charge of the U.S., noted that "hundreds, if not thousands, of law enforcement professionals" have been planning the event for several months. Officials report no specific, credible threats for the weekend.
President Trump is scheduled to speak around 9 p.m. on July 4, prior to the fireworks show at 10:30 p.m.
CBS will broadcast "The Great American Block Party 250," a primetime special hosted by CBS Evening News anchor Tony Dokoupil and Entertainment Tonight's Nischelle Turner, featuring live musical performances and celebrations nationwide.
