ARLINGTON, Texas — On July 3, Egypt advanced to the World Cup round of 16 by defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
Egypt took the lead early with Emam Ashour scoring a header off Karim Hafez’s cross in the 13th minute. Australia equalized 10 minutes into the second half when Aiden O'Neill’s free kick was inadvertently headed into the net by Mohamed Hany, marking his second own goal of the tournament.
In the penalty shootout, Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the decisive penalty after Australia missed two attempts.
This victory marked Egypt’s first win in a knockout game at the World Cup and earned them a place in the last 16, where they will face either Argentina or Cape Verde in Atlanta on Tuesday.
