Sixteen children, ranging in age from one and a half to 18, were rescued from a dilapidated home in rural Hamden, Ohio, where they had been confined to a single room for much of the past four years, authorities reported on July 1, 2026. The children, all from the same family, were found living in squalor surrounded by human waste. Some of the children were unable to speak, and one 18-year-old with developmental disabilities could not even spell her name.

Parents and grandparents have been charged in connection with the case, which police described as an "intra-family situation" rather than human trafficking.
