New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) is scheduled to deliver a speech on Friday commemorating America’s 250th birthday. He will be joined by recently naturalized citizens during the event, which is set to occur hours before President Trump’s national address at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota.
Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and later became a U.S. citizen, will speak shortly after the Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship in a recent ruling. The decision has drawn criticism from conservative justices and lawmakers.
A democratic socialist, Mamdani has gained political prominence after supporting three congressional candidates in recent House races, two of whom defeated incumbents. This, along with Melat Kiros’s victory over longtime Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado, has fueled speculation about the growing influence of democratic socialists within the Democratic Party.
Mamdani is also known for his vocal support of Palestine and criticism of Israel, a stance that continues to create divisions within the party. He has criticized elected officials who have received funding from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and establishment politicians for insufficient efforts to end U.S. military strikes in Iran.
Despite his outspoken views, Mamdani has maintained a "productive" relationship with President Trump, having met with him twice inside the Oval Office.
