The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have launched intense attacks on Sudan’s strategic southern city of el-Obeid, currently held by the Sudanese military. Analysts warn that if the RSF succeeds in seizing the city, it would significantly strengthen their control over western Sudan.

The battle has escalated over recent weeks, with hundreds of thousands of civilians suffering as a result. Meanwhile, Amnesty International has accused the RSF of committing ethnic cleansing in Sudan’s el-Fasher region. The United Nations Human Rights Council has announced plans to hold an urgent meeting to address the ongoing Sudan crisis.

In a related development, five humanitarian workers were killed in a convoy ambush in South Sudan, highlighting the broader regional instability.

Experts such as Ali Mahmoud Ali, a Sudan researcher with Armed Conflict, Location & Event Data, and Kholood Khair, founding director of the Khartoum-based think tank Confluence Advisory, emphasize the critical nature of el-Obeid in the conflict.
