Kylian Mbappe and coach Didier Deschamps achieved new milestones at the FIFA World Cup as they led France to a 3-0 victory over Sweden in East Rutherford, securing their place in the tournament's round of 16.
Mbappe opened the scoring in the 45th minute with a powerful shot from the left side. Eight minutes into the second half, Michael Olise assisted Bradley Barcola, who doubled France’s lead with a goal into the top corner.
With his fifth and sixth goals of the tournament, Mbappe has pulled even with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race. He now holds the record for the most goals scored in the World Cup knockout stage, with 10 goals, surpassing Brazilian legends Leonidas and Ronaldo, who each had eight.
Earlier in the tournament, Messi equaled Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup goal record of 16 by scoring a hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria.
Other notable World Cup developments include South Korea’s exit prompting public outrage, Saudi Arabia’s early departure leading to the resignation of their federation chief, and Germany facing a humbling defeat with implications for Paraguay.
