Thousands of police officers were deployed across South Africa on June 30, 2026, following large-scale protests against illegal immigration that erupted in multiple cities. The unrest involved thousands of mostly poor or unemployed South Africans demanding the departure of all illegal migrants ahead of an unofficial deadline set by some organizers.

The protests, described as the largest migration-related demonstrations since 2008, included destructive clashes and looting. At least four people have been killed amid the violence, Reuters reported.

In Benoni, east of Johannesburg, police deployed tactical vehicles and fired shots after being confronted by roughly 500 protesters, according to Daily Maverick. Meanwhile, Reuters reported that about 100 Congolese nationals were found sleeping on the streets of Durban.

The immigrant population in South Africa is estimated at about 3 million, roughly 4% of the total population, according to StatsSA. Protesters claim that foreign migrants have taken jobs by accepting lower wages and have contributed to higher crime rates.

Jacinta Ngobese, leader of the March and March group, told Reuters two weeks prior that the group plans to hold weekly marches until their demands are met, despite the government rejecting the deadline and stating that only authorities can enforce immigration laws. One prominent organization behind the unrest stated it cannot be held responsible for spontaneous incidents of violence during the demonstrations.

Authorities warned, "To those who intend to break the law tomorrow, our message is simple: do not test the resolve of the State."
