Republican Senator Steve Daines has denied meeting with Cheng Li-wun, leader of Taiwan’s main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party, during her visit to the United States earlier this month. Daines told the South China Morning Post that Cheng met only with members of his staff and "did not meet me."

Cheng had posted on Facebook on June 12 that she met with Daines among other US lawmakers in Washington, including Republican Senator Dan Sullivan and GOP House members John Rose and Chuck Fleischmann. She stated they exchanged views on US-Taiwan relations, Indo-Pacific security, regional stability, and the cross-strait situation.

Cheng’s visit was part of a broader two-week tour across multiple US cities, including San Francisco, Boston, and New York, aimed at strengthening ties with US policymakers.

Taiwanese media outlet United Daily News reported that Daines focused on energy and resource security rather than cross-strait relations in his discussions with Cheng.
