Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres (N.Y.) on Tuesday voiced sympathy for Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (N.J.) regarding his struggle with depression, while urging the New Jersey lawmaker to be more transparent about any extended absences in the future.
Torres, who has personal experience with depression, emphasized the importance of medical leave but also highlighted the duty of public officials to maintain transparency. "I might not be alive today were it not for a prolonged hospitalization and proper medication," Torres wrote in a post on X.
Kean addressed the House on Tuesday to explain his unexpected absence, which led to him missing 135 votes. He revealed that he was hospitalized for treatment and initially hoped to return within weeks, a timeline he believed at the time. During his absence, Kean did not make public appearances in his district or in Washington, D.C., prompting concern about his whereabouts.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) stated he was informed of Kean's condition earlier in the month and agreed that the lawmaker should be more transparent about his medical status going forward.
