Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) stated that the Democratic Party required "a change" in response to recent victories by democratic socialists in Democratic primaries. Speaking on Fox News's "America's Newsroom," de Blasio described the current momentum as an insurgency the party needed, citing the 2024 elections when many viewed the Democratic Party as part of the disliked status quo.

"Ironically, [President] Trump seemed like the guy who was ready to break the status quo. Now the tables have turned," de Blasio said.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have gained increased attention following the election of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) last year and further strengthened their influence with two recent wins in notable House primaries. The movement traces some of its national momentum to Bernie Sanders's 2016 presidential run, which boosted democratic socialism in the U.S.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent democratic socialist and Democratic Party figure, has been mentioned as a potential 2028 presidential candidate.

Democratic socialists are now aiming for another significant victory in Colorado, where leftist candidate and former attorney Melat Kiros is challenging a progressive incumbent representative.
