The township of Naracoorte, located in South Australia's South East and home to about 6,300 residents, has become a notable hub for migrants arriving in Australia. These new arrivals have contributed to filling labor shortages, opening businesses, and increasing volunteer participation, enhancing the town's vibrancy.
Naracoorte Lions Club member Malcom McEachern highlighted the positive impact of migrant settlement, stating the town "would be worse off in all other aspects if migrants were not encouraged to move there" and that migrant settlement "had boosted the town's vibrancy."
Local business owner Mr Ali noted that many migrants have been encouraged to start businesses in Naracoorte, contributing to economic growth. He also observed that "when we came here [in 2011], there were fewer migrants in this town, but now the population is growing more."
Despite a housing shortage, the community remains supportive of the migrant influx. The town's cultural diversity is evident in everyday life, with different accents heard on the main street and multicultural participation in sporting clubs and local churches. Mr McEachern described how "after the work day finishes, probably from about 4pm onwards [the energy changes]," reflecting the lively atmosphere migrants help create.
The integration of migrants extends to social institutions, with increased attendance and participation in schools and churches. One migrant recalled that upon arrival, the president of their Kiribati community actively engaged them with local events and activities.
Naracoorte continues to grow with more businesses opening, driven in part by the entrepreneurial spirit of its migrant residents.
